The question of Palestinian statehood has remained unresolved for decades, despite sustained diplomacy and numerous international initiatives. The prolonged conflict has caused immense human suffering and denied generations of Palestinians the chance to live with freedom, security, and dignity, while leaving core issues of self determination and statehood unsettled.
The devastation in Gaza has further underscored the urgency of addressing the conflict’s political roots. As of 5 August 2026, at least 73,381 Palestinians, including 21,283 children, have reportedly been killed and 174,231 injured (OCHA, 2026). More than 81% of Gaza’s structures have been destroyed or damaged. Ending this cycle of violence requires more than humanitarian relief; it demands a credible political pathway toward a sovereign, viable Palestinian state.
This pathway must address the interconnected questions of Gaza and the West Bank, territorial integrity, governance, security, and the future of the Two-State solution. Recent developments, including President Trump’s initiative, have created renewed diplomatic momentum, but the challenge remains how to translate it into a political process capable of delivering a just and lasting peace.
This session will examine what it would take to move beyond recurring conflict, humanitarian crises, and diplomatic deadlock. It will explore prospects for Palestinian statehood, the conditions for lasting peace and security, and the international political will needed to turn longstanding commitments into meaningful action.
